Don’t ever regret what you did if you were really happy at that moment

When I was 17, my parents sent me to Italy for the summer. It was a wonderful experience, and I made some great friends. But one night we went out drinking at this small bar and got kicked out after an altercation with the bouncers. The next morning, I woke up with a headache and no memory of what had happened—except that it didn’t end well. My friends took off without me, but luckily they called later that day to let me know they were fine and had found their way home safely. Still, looking back on those few hours is tough: What if we hadn’t been kicked out?

You will have regrets. But don’t regret what you did if you were really happy at that moment.

For example, I used to work in an office where I was told I could leave early on Fridays if there was no business left for me to attend to that day. One day, one of my coworkers was leaving early and asked if I wanted to do the same. Of course, this sounded like a great idea! So we went home together and went out for drinks afterward—and it was awesome!

The next week though, there were still things for me to do at work on Friday afternoon so I stayed until 5 PM instead of 4 PM (as per usual). The rest of the week was terrible because I couldn’t stop thinking about how much fun we would’ve had had we left earlier as originally planned!

When you’re looking back on a decision, it can be hard to remember how you felt at that moment. It’s hard to remember how things were in the past. But try and think about how you were feeling and what you did during that time. Try and remember what it was like to do those things and if they made you happy or not. If they made you happy at the time, then don’t regret them!

And that’s it! Don’t ever regret anything if you were really happy at the time. Remember that feeling of happiness and carry it with you throughout your life.
